Peace Lily
A very popular houseplant, the peace lily is well-known for it’s air purifying qualities.
It originally came from Colombia and Venezuela and belongs to the Aracaea family. In 1870 the Spathiphyllum was introduced in Europe. Nowadays it is one of the most commonly grown houseplants, known for its lush, glossy leaves and upright white flowers.
Tip from Cambridge Bee: Peace Lily enjoys partial sun or a shady location, and definitely does not do well in sunlight. It is toxic to both cats and dogs.
“ZZ” Plant or Zanzibar Gem
One of the hardest plants to kill (perfect for those forgetful gardeners) is the Zanzibar Gem, or ZZ plant. It is also a very attractive plant, with small dark green leaves.
Along with the Snake Plant, this plant has a unique mechanism which enables the plant to absorb CO2 at night, making it an excellent choice for the bedroom.
Tip from Cambridge Bee: Avoid direct sunlight. Stores water in the roots so you can go on holiday and not worry about watering!
Monstera Deliciosa
This beautiful big leaved plant has become popular in recent years, with variegated versions selling for a lot of money. It thrives best in environments with at least 60% humidity, making it a great plant for bathrooms.
Tip from Cambridge Bee: Younger plants have no holes to begin with, but don’t worry they will soon appear as your plant starts to mature.
Calathea White Fusion
A child and pet-friendly plant that is perfect for your home. This plant is a bit more high-maintenance then the others, requiring moist soil and direct sunlight, but is excellent at purifying the air in your home.
Top tip: The leaves can collect dust, so give them a wipe down regularly!
Snake Plant or Mother in Law’s Tongue
If you place this plant in your bedroom, you are in for a good night’s sleep. This yellow tipped plant releases oxygen at night, helping you to breathe better whilst sleeping. It is one of the best plants for filtering the air of formaldehyde, xylene, benzene, toluene, and trichloroethylene.
Tip from Cambridge Bee: These plants grow well in poor conditions and similar to succulents require very little maintenance. Be careful not to overwater, as the roots are prone to rotting in overly moist soil.
