Superfoods to save the day!
Superfoods are packed with nutritious properties and will help boost your immune system, level up your mood levels, lower inflammation levels, manage your weight and say goodbye to seasonal depression.
Don’t believe me? I dare you to try incorporating these superfoods in your diet for a month and watch the effects. The issue with Brits’ traditional diet is that we now buy most of our food in supermarkets in ultra-processed forms.
We barely receive enough minerals and vitamins to keep us going through the day and wash down our meals with sugar and caffeine to feel slightly less sluggish. I remember turning on the TV and watching controversial nutritionist Gillian McKeith order women to dump their chocolate in some pink rubbish bins, loudly accusing them of ruining their health.
At first, I found that ridiculous, I mean – the waste! But then I saw her point. The processed food we eat is toxic. Whereas superfoods tend to be unprocessed, add loads of flavours and have near-medical properties.
No, they are not a magic pill but on the long run, you will notice the effects. Here are my top superfoods!
Online High Street and its superfoods!
- Bananas
Bananas are the best! They are packed with potassium, zinc and vitamins. They help against brain fog, low energy levels, cramps and moodiness. They even help with managing cholesterol levels. If you are worried about the calorie content, just know that bananas tend to help accelerate your metabolism. It’s better to eat a 100 calorie banana than a 70 calorie mini-muffin!
- Dates.
Those sweet little treats are absolutely delicious and revered in North Africa as well as the Middle East. Include them in your smoothies and you won’t regret it. Although the sugar content of dates is high, these mini-desserts are packed with antioxidants, which fight the aging process. They help treat constipation, intestinal disorders and boosts bone health. They are to be eaten in moderation.
- Chia seeds
Chia seeds are like the holy grail of health foods. I love adding them to yoghurt and adding a scoop of my favourite fruit. These seedlings don’t taste like much but pack eight times the amount of calcium than milk, have more vitamin C than oranges and more Omega3 than salmon. Perfect for vegetarians! They help with stabilising blood sugar levels, energy levels, promoting good digestion and reducing inflammation (Your knees will thank you!).
- Spinach
Spinach is my favourite. You can have it in any salad or smoothie. From calcium, to vitamin K and A, spinach has it all! It’s the best for fighting skin conditions like psoriasis, wrinkles and acne and it strengthens the eyes!
- Broccoli
Broccoli tastes amazing when steamed, covered in a spoonful of olive oil and chopped onions. (A Romanian friend taught me this!). Broccoli has an amazing amount of vitamin C. It prevents sun damage on your skin, its betacarotene boosts your immune system and its magnesium is great for blood pressure.
- Matcha
Matcha is a superstar-superfood! The bitter taste of matcha is wonderful in tea, smoothies and desserts. Japanese people even see matcha tea as a necessary drink to close a ceremonial meal. Matcha has fiber, chlorophyll and selenium. These properties help decrease anxiety levels whilst boosting your energy – unlike our friend coffee!
- Walnuts
Walnut halves look like brains for a reason! The healthy fats in walnuts promote good blood circulation and therefore brain health! I love walnuts in salads and I find the walnuts and pears combination divine.
- Blueberries
Blueberries are so delicious, if you have them before eating sweets, the sweets will taste horrible. I love eating them on their own or in yoghurt. They’re packed with antioxidants, by now, you know this delays aging but also helps fight dementia. Good to know.
- Clementines
The Christmas fruit! Although the peel leaves an unpleasant residual smell, I can’t help but eat them.
They are so rich in vitamin C that they boost immunity and it is said they can help against cancer prevention.
- Cacao powder
Yummy cacao powder, the purest form of chocolate! I often add a scoop to my plant-based milk and go from there. You will learn to like the bitter form of cacao powder as it is the purest. The good news with cacao powder is that it helps with glucose levels and insulin resistance which doesn’t sound like something chocolate can do.
I hope you enjoyed learning more about my favourite superfoods.
